Mastitis

As taken from kellymom.com:

"Mastitis may occur more frequently with shield use, twins or other multiples, or when a baby suddenly sleeps longer during the night."

Well shoot. Shield use? Check. Twins? Check. Suddenly sleeping longer at night? Check.

I didn't ever have this problem when I breastfed Emily, but this morning I am in quite a bit of pain. (Just this week Elsie normally sleeps for 5-6 hours and Elias sleeps for 7-9 hours.) I guess I need to take my temperature and call the doctor?

Anybody else have any experience with Mastitis? How can you tell the difference between a plugged duct and mastitis? The symptoms are listed as the same, except maybe mastitis is more severe?

What a bummer. As if nursing twins wasn't hard enough!

Definitely call your doctor before it gets worse. I have a friend who had an extreme case and ended up having surgery. Most of the time, they can treat you with medication. Good luck with feeding - I know it can be extremely painful. (I had a slight case with Kylie.)

Yikes. I had the same w/ Madeline, and call your dr.! It is painful, and you don't want it to escalate. Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon! Anne

Warm compresses are also lovely. Mastitis is an actual bacterial infection, while a plugged duct just needs to get going again. You know how Scott's hand looked when Fred bit him? You'll get that streaking with a true mastitis, and you'll need meds. (Not a doctor, but had a few cases of each in the 39 total months of nursing...)

You're on the right track with letting Eli go first. Try massaging the affected area while he nurses. This of course, requires the help of a good husband if your other side has a person on it, too!

Hi Malisa,
I didn't have masstitis at all with Isa, but I got it 4 or 5 times with Cade. It's HORRIBLE! about the 3rd or 4th time I got it a nurse told me that I should take Tylenol as soon as I started feeling it coming on. So the next time I did that and it really helped. Also, the warm compressions help and try to have the babies nurse as often as possible. I'm so sorry! Hope it goes away quickly!!!!

I am wondering if it may be worth it to try and nurse during the night? Shoot. I REALLY don't want to wake the babies for a feeding.

Maybe I will wake myself up a couple of times to pump. And I will make myself an appointment. This is yuck!
